A Sonic Remembrance: Chief Mngobane ka Gegana I (Mokopane Kekana I)

A spiritual reclaim and relocation of our ancestral connection to the land, rivers, and mountains where our forefathers chose to make a living.

An ongoing research project of rediscovery and relearning through poetry and music.

A trace and recollection through music and poetry, inspired by the history of Ndebele tribesmen led by Chief Mngobane ka Gegana/Mokopane Kekana I. One of the revered in a line of chiefs that led Ndebele people(Kekana Chiefdom) of Northern Transvaal in the 1850s
The Ndebele lost a battle against the Boere(Voortrekkers) in 1854, after the slain of the Boere leader Piet Potgieter in the area around Mogalakwena River. After their conquest, the board renamed the town of Vredenburg to Potgietersrus in his honor. The name was later changed again to Mokopane, this time in honor of the Ndebele chief and it remains so to this day.

They sink me to depths where the sun never comes
I come out as the soil

They plant their placentas and bury their dead
I carry my bloodline

With history reeled in fragmented timeframes
In my literary discourse, I research the archives
My pen seeks to stretch past these colonized narratives
Chronicles of parasites study case my culture
Pseudo perspectives, they`re misquoting the natives
I`m an indigenous artifact endangered
My pen is untimely, my clan anthem is beat
I echo from episodes full of traumatized past
